Kotahitanga, Christchurch tragedy – support for people affected
25 March 2019.
We would like to pay tribute to all the individuals and organisations who have stepped up to provide support to the people affected by the Christchurch tragedy.
The Government's 0800 helpline has now been set up to provide advice and support to people who have been affected. The number is 0800 779 997.
As we mentioned in last week’s Kotahitanga special edition, people and families impacted by the tragedy will generally receive financial support or compensation from ACC if they’re injured or a family member has died. This may include funeral assistance, partner and dependent grants and childcare assistance, and compensation for loss of income if the person who died was working in New Zealand.
We can provide additional support such as special needs grants, advance payment of benefits, emergency benefits and a range of other help. People don’t need to be on a benefit to receive help. People can also use the MyMSD online service.
We have been working closely with the Muslim community in Christchurch to help connect people with advice and support. Specialist services for the Muslim community continue to be available at our Linwood and Riccarton branches with Muslim staff members onsite.
Please encourage people who need help to call 0800 779 997 or visit one of our service centres.
